What is a doula & how could I support you?
A doula is someone that can primarily support you and your partner/family members during your pregnancy, birth and in the postnatal period. Someone you can trust to walk beside you throughout your journey, a compassionate, caring, informed companion, advocating for you and putting you and your baby’s needs at the heart of everything.
A doula doesn’t have a set list of jobs, they get to know you and your family, ask you what your needs are, sit down with you, discuss what support looks like for you and make a plan together to make sure you are cared for in a way that is right for you and your family.
Sadly, support is still a subject that is thought of as being a luxury, many of us still don’t like to ask or feel we are failing by asking, but how are we meant to be the best versions of ourselves without love, nurture, a listening ear and a trusted community we can rely on and turn to? As a mother, we raise our children to be confident and happy, filling their cups with love, reassurance, and support. So why should we shy away from the idea of support as an adult, if anything, we need it even more.
A doula will support mothers but also support partners/husbands, other children and family members within the household if that’s what our clients need . A doula is not there to take over or replace the job of the birth partner, unless you choose your doula as your primary birth partner for reasons personal to you. We will work as a team supporting a birth partner/ husband so that the primary focus will be completely on the person giving birth, holding a safe space for her.
A doula’s support is individual to you, we are not medially trained and cannot offer any clinical or medical support, however we are there to build a trusted relationship with not only you, but any healthcare providers. We will research, and provide non-judgemental evidence based information to help you navigate any difficult decisions , making sure you feel empowered in your choices, your voice is heard, and your needs are met.
Emotional and physical support is key in a doula’s role, I want you to feel nurtured and loved throughout your whole birth journey and postnatally. I want you to feel safe in the space I hold for you, which is why it is so important for us to meet and have a chance to get to know each other first before we make the decision to work together. Pregnancy is a sacred time and I am incredibly passionate about making sure you get the birth and postnatal care you deserve, that your experience from the moment you reach out to me will be protected, empowered and a memory you will cherish forever.
As a mother myself. I understand our journeys take many different paths, we can not always plan for every eventuality but we can choose how to navigate those paths. Whether you choose to birth in hospital, require a cesarean section or request to birth at home, I’m passionate about making sure I understand your wishes, working closely with you to make sure your pregnancy, birth & postpartum dreams and expectations are met as closely as possible.
